Lightning Network Aims to Streamline Cross-Border Money Transfers from the U.S. to Mexico
FinTech firm SoFi Technologies has announced the forthcoming introduction of international money transfers utilizing the Lightning Network and the Lightspark blockchain solution. The initial corridor will connect the United States to Mexico.
SoFi Technologies, a well-known American FinTech firm providing a diverse array of financial services such as asset management and digital banking, disclosed its intention to incorporate Lightning Network technology into its offerings.
In particular, the SoFi Checking & Savings application will integrate the Lightspark blockchain solution. This initiative will allow SoFi users to execute cross-border transfers around the clock. The transfer process involves automatically converting the sender’s U.S. dollars into BTC, routing them through the Lightning Network, and promptly exchanging them into the recipient’s local currency. Conversion will occur in real time, enabling users to view exchange rates and fees prior to finalizing the transaction. Funds will be deposited into the recipient’s bank account almost immediately.
The technical backbone of the project is the Universal Money Address (UMA), an infrastructure solution created by Lightspark on the Lightning Network. UMA serves as a “money address” standard, akin to how email operates with straightforward and unique addresses. With UMA, funds can be sent internationally by knowing only the recipient’s address, simplifying transfers to the level of sending an email.
The service will be accessible to 11.7 million SoFi Bank customers. The company asserts that fees will be lower than the U.S. average and that transactions will be entirely transparent.
SoFi CEO Anthony Noto highlighted that the capability to send quick and cost-effective transfers will greatly enhance customers’ financial experiences. Lightspark Co-Founder David Marcus remarked that significant interest is already evident in the substantial number of waitlist registrations.
The service will initially launch in Mexico, a leading destination for remittances from the U.S., with yearly cross-border flows surpassing $60 billion. SoFi intends to pilot the technology in this corridor before swiftly expanding it to additional countries.
The Lightning Network is increasingly adopted by payment providers for international transfers. For example, Revolut has recently enabled Lightning Network support for users in the U.K. and select EU nations, while Nubank has provided access to the Lightning Network for users in Latin America.
