JPMorgan Chief Executive Jamie Dimon Draws Parallels Between Bitcoin and Smoking
JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon has once again criticized Bitcoin, asserting that it possesses no inherent value and is often exploited by malicious individuals. He also likened Bitcoin to smoking, stating that while individuals may have the right to engage in it, that does not imply it is a wise choice.
In a Sunday interview with CBS News, Dimon remarked: “We’re going to have some form of digital currency at some point. I’m not opposed to crypto. You know, Bitcoin itself has no intrinsic value. It’s heavily utilized by sex traffickers, money launderers, and ransomware. Therefore, I just don’t feel positive about Bitcoin.”
“I commend your ability to want to buy or sell it. Just like I believe you have the right to smoke, but I don’t think you should smoke.”
Dimon Maintains Firm Position on Bitcoin While Supporting Blockchain Solutions
Dimon has consistently maintained that Bitcoin lacks intrinsic value, asserting that it primarily drives speculation. In the past, he has referred to it as a “fraud,” “hyped-up fraud,” “pet rock,” and “worthless.” He has also compared it to speculative bubbles such as the Dutch tulip mania. Dimon cautions that investors are likely to encounter negative outcomes.
While Dimon has been critical of crypto, he holds a more favorable view of blockchain technology. He recognizes its practical applications and has emphasized JPMorgan’s participation in blockchain-based initiatives like JPM Coin.
Dimon Not Surprised by Trump’s Election, Says Voters Desired Pro-Growth Policies
In another segment of the interview, Jamie Dimon expressed that he was not surprised by Donald Trump’s election victory. He explained that voters are seeking more pro-business policies. Despite positive indicators such as low unemployment, controlled inflation, and a thriving stock market, Dimon remains cautious. He acknowledges that he is “cautiously pessimistic” regarding the economic outlook.
“People were frustrated with what they referred to as the state – the ‘swamp.’ Ineffective government. That people wanted more pro-growth and pro-business policies, and they didn’t want to be lectured on social policies constantly. I think it’s the lecturing aspect. It’s social superiority, it’s the ‘My way or the highway.’ I traveled all over the country; I sensed it wherever I went.”
