The German Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) has declared the initiation of a government wallet for EUDI, which will be launched as a smartphone application. This wallet will facilitate the secure digital identification of citizens across the EU, in addition to storing and accessing personal data and official documents. Through the EUDI app, users will have the capability to sign documents using Qualified Electronic Signatures (QES).

The wallet’s development is in accordance with the EU’s Electronic Identification, Authentication, and Trust Services (eIDAS) regulation, which was approved in February 2024. As per the new guidelines, all EU member states must implement at least one digital identification wallet by 2027.

Nancy Faeser, Germany’s Minister of the Interior, has stated that the government intends to create avenues for private developers to engage in the project. Faeser is confident that this strategy will promote innovation in Germany by enabling local businesses and research institutions to provide alternative solutions for leveraging EUDI.

The initiative will be conducted by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation (SPRIND), and the Federal Office for Information Security. As part of this initiative, six companies chosen by SPRIND in May 2024 will design the wallet architecture that adheres to stringent standards of data protection and user privacy.

Beginning on October 9, 2024, online consultations with the public will start, allowing all interested stakeholders to discuss potential wallet architecture and methods for large-scale implementation.

Authorities in South Korea, Brazil, Kenya, Argentina, and numerous other nations outside the EU are also working on the development of ID systems.
