India Transitions Government Document Management to Blockchain Technology
The Indian government is utilizing blockchain networks to archive documents from various departments and states. Approximately 8 million documents have been digitized.
India’s National Informatics Center (NIC), operating under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has launched a website to monitor the nation’s advancements in various blockchain projects.
This portal specifically tracks the volume of documents uploaded to blockchain networks. As of March 3, around ~7.94 million documents have been digitized, originating from six states and three government departments: the Central Board of Secondary Education, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, and the Ministry of Justice.
Documents are stored on the Ethereum, Hyperledger Fabric, and Hyperledger Sawtooth blockchains. Five blockchain solutions have been implemented, each designated for a particular category of document. The digitization process encompasses:
- educational certificates;
- documents pertaining to the judicial system;
- documents verifying real estate ownership;
- logistical documents associated with medical supply chains.
Additionally, several tools have been introduced to authenticate data stored on blockchain networks. Currently, these tools are applicable to the state of Karnataka but are expected to extend to all regions of the country in the future.
Furthermore, Indian authorities are developing blockchain solutions to manage data related to land records, blood banks, goods and services tax refunds, and the public distribution system. The implementation of blockchain technology aims to tackle the issue of fraudulent individuals utilizing counterfeit documents.
In 2022, it was reported that the police department in the Indian state of Goa planned to eliminate paper documentation entirely, opting for a fully digitized system on the blockchain network. That same year, it was revealed that India’s Ministry of Textiles, Commerce, and Industry aimed to establish a blockchain-based system for monitoring cotton logistics to enhance the transparency of export shipments.
