Inactive Bitcoin Whale Activates After 11 Years to Move $31 Million in BTC

A Bitcoin wallet that had been dormant for over ten years has recently transferred more than $30 million worth of to a different address.

The whale acquired the funds in mid-April 2012 when the USD price of the leading cryptocurrency was below $5.

  • According to Lookonchain, the enigmatic whale, which had been inactive for over 11 years, moved assets valued at approximately $31 million (based on current market prices) to a wallet identified by the abbreviation “bc1qt180” on July 22.
  • The total amount of 1,037.42 BTC was received on April 11, 2012, when the prominent digital currency was priced at $4.92. Due to the appreciation of bitcoin over the years, the value of this stash has increased by 606,000%.
  • Numerous Twitter users who commented on the post expressed confusion regarding the whale’s actions, with some speculating that they may have lost access to their private keys or experienced a temporary hack.
  • Others indicated that the BTC investor had missed the opportunity to reactivate their holdings by two years, referencing bitcoin’s peak price during that period.
  • As reported by CryptoPotato, another whale that had been inactive for nine years re-emerged in April this year to transfer 2,071.5 BTC to a new address. At the time of the transaction, the stash was valued at over $60 million, compared to $1.3 million in 2013.
