The officials of Próspera, the special economic zone in Honduras, have formally accepted Bitcoin as a unit of account. Jorge Colindres, the tax commissioner and acting manager of ZEDE, confirmed this development. Colindres stated that this initiative is intended to provide greater financial autonomy to individuals and businesses within the area.

Inhabitants of Próspera can now perform transactions, keep accounting records, and benefit from tax deductions in BTC. Additionally, Bitcoin can act as a monetary unit for determining the market value of various goods and services within the ZEDE jurisdiction, located on Roatán Island.

Concerning taxation, the local e-governance system still faces certain constraints. Entities choosing to use BTC will have their tax responsibilities calculated based on the cryptocurrency’s value in relation to the US dollar or the Honduran lempira. There are ongoing efforts to facilitate direct tax payments in BTC in the future.

Founded in May 2020, the Próspera ZEDE free economic zone recognized BTC as legal tender in April 2022. Later, in September of the same year, Bitcoin Valley, a cryptocurrency initiative, was introduced in Honduras. More than 60 local businesses in Santa Lucia adopted BTC payments for their goods and services as part of this project.
