HBO Documentary Identifies Peter Todd as Bitcoin Creator Satoshi Nakamoto

HBO has released its new Bitcoin documentary, Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, which identifies former Bitcoin developer Peter Todd as Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin.

The documentary presents evidence suggesting Todd is Satoshi, including the claim that a 2010 post on BitcoinTalk was inadvertently made from Todd’s account. It also cites cryptic messages from Todd implying he had destroyed access to the 1.1 million BTC held in wallets linked to Satoshi.

Todd has firmly denied these allegations. Responding to leaks of the documentary prior to its 9 p.m. Eastern Time release, Todd told the press, “I’m not Satoshi.”

“It’s ironic that a director who is also known for a documentary on QAnon has resorted to QAnon style coincidence-based conspiracy thinking here too,” he added.

Todd was referring to filmmaker Cullen Hoback, who directed Money Electric and previously identified the person behind the QAnon conspiracy theory in an earlier HBO series.

HBO’s Satoshi Nakamoto Claim Draws Skepticism

The crypto community has reacted with immediate skepticism to HBO’s claim.

X user PixOnChain debunked the “2010 BitcoinTalk post” claim, explaining that it was likely not a follow-up comment from Satoshi accidentally made from Todd’s account.

The BitMEX Research team described HBO’s claim that Peter Todd is Satoshi as “ridiculous.” Referring to the 2010 BitcoinTalk comment made by Todd, BitMEX argued that “there is zero reason to believe this was Satoshi.”

Peter Todd Meme Coins Surge

While HBO’s claims have drawn significant skepticism and do not seem to have closed the book on the Satoshi mystery, this has not stopped meme coin traders from speculating feverishly.

One of the best-performing new meme coins was $YOURMOM, which surged 9,500% since its launch earlier in the day, according to DEXTools.

$YOURMOM was created in response to rising speculation that Todd would be named as Satoshi earlier that day. The token references a joke Todd once made stating that the name of his cat was “your mom.”

Todd noticed the meme coin and gave it a shoutout on his Twitter account, although he was mocking the logic behind one caller’s investment thesis for the token.

The question of who Satoshi Nakamoto remains unsettled. This may be for the best, as the mystery of Bitcoin’s anonymous and absent creator has been key to fostering the idea of Bitcoin as a decentralized, digital alternative to gold.

However, at least some meme coin traders were able to make a quick profit in the meantime.
