Governor of Irkutsk Region: Ban on Mining Reduced Pressure on Energy System, 2026/04/17 12:01:11

The Governor of Irkutsk Region, Igor Kobzev, stated that the prohibition of cryptocurrency mining has led to a decrease in the strain on the regional energy system.
The region continues to face an energy deficit issue; however, according to the regional leader, the situation has started to improve:
“Due to the mining ban, we have significantly alleviated the load on the regional energy system. The number of overdue contracts for connecting households to the electrical networks has notably decreased — from 11,000 to 216,” Kobzev remarked.
The company “Irkutskenergosbyt” pointed out that the issue of illegal mining remains pressing. According to their data, approximately 8,000 instances of unauthorized connections have been identified, although the actual number may be higher.
The company’s director, Andrey Kharitonov, stated that appeals to the integrity of offenders are ineffective, and in practice, economic and administrative measures yield results.
As of April 7, 2025, cryptocurrency mining is prohibited in the Irkutsk Region. The restrictions apply to 29 municipal entities, including Irkutsk, Angarsk, and Shelekhov.
Previously, the State Duma adopted a bill in its first reading concerning administrative liability for violations of cryptocurrency mining legislation.
