Google Unveils Open Protocol for Payments to AI Agents
Google has introduced a universal protocol for payments initiated by artificial intelligence. Over 60 prominent companies are participating in its development, including Mastercard, American Express, PayPal, Coinbase, and Revolut.
Google has launched the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), a novel open protocol that allows AI agents to securely perform transactions on behalf of users. This solution establishes a common language for interaction among buyers, sellers, and payment providers, ensuring security and transparency across various payment methods, including bank cards, transfers, stablecoins, and cryptocurrencies.
AP2 tackles three primary challenges associated with the transition to agent-driven payments:
- authorization — verifying that a user has authorized a specific action for the artificial intelligence;
- authenticity — confirming that an agent’s request accurately represents the client’s true intent;
- accountability — documenting responsibility in cases of errors or fraud.
Central to the protocol are digital Mandates, cryptographically signed agreements that encapsulate the user’s intent and act as proof for each transaction. These can be utilized for immediate purchases (e.g., confirming orders) as well as pre-authorized tasks, such as automatically acquiring tickets under specified conditions.
More than 60 global organizations are aiding in the establishment of the standard, including Adyen, American Express, Ant International, Coinbase, Etsy, Intuit, JCB, Mastercard, PayPal, Revolut, Salesforce, UnionPay International, Worldpay, and others. The protocol also features an extension for cryptocurrency payments (A2A x402), developed in partnership with Coinbase, the Ethereum Foundation, and MetaMask.
As stated in the announcement, AP2 will enable businesses to explore new commerce scenarios, ranging from personalized offers and price monitoring to intricate tasks like automatically reserving flights and accommodations within a specified budget.
AP2 is anticipated to serve as the foundation for expanding what is termed “agentic commerce,” where AI significantly influences the management of purchases and financial transactions. Google envisions that the protocol will establish a unified global standard and create opportunities for B2B solutions, procurement automation, and integration within the Web3 ecosystem.
