France to create regional metaverses in competition with international leaders
The French administration led by Emmanuel Macron declared on Tuesday the initiation of a public consultation regarding “virtual immersive universes,” commonly referred to as the metaverse, with the objective of creating alternatives.
Fast facts
- According to a press release from the French Ministry of Economy and Finance, the topic of metaverse development has surfaced in economic discussions over the past few months, indicating that a digital transition is on the horizon.
- The ministry noted that the outcomes of the consultation, which concludes on May 2, will inform a strategy focused on development and local alternatives to metaverses managed by technology giants. This will influence the French government’s forthcoming metaverse strategy and policy choices.
- The announcement also mentioned that the term “metaverse” remains open to interpretation. The definition of this term has been a subject of contention in various regions globally. Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft Gaming, referred to the metaverse as a “poorly constructed video game.”
- In its announcement, the French government characterized the metaverse as an online service that provides access to simulations of virtual environments, enabling users to engage in a virtual reality that envelops them. This service also facilitates real-time interactions with other users and their virtual surroundings through avatars.
- Major global companies such as Meta Platforms, Microsoft, and Tencent have been working on metaverse platforms or related services. Meta, the parent company of social media platforms Instagram and Facebook, reported a loss of US$13.7 billion last year attributed to the underperformance of its Horizon Worlds metaverse. Concurrently, Microsoft and Tencent are said to have scaled back their investments in the development of virtual platforms.
- During his recent visit to China, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Europe must lessen its reliance on the U.S. and establish its “strategic autonomy,” as reported by Politico.
