The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States has issued a caution regarding fraudulent job advertisements that entice individuals to Southeast Asia, where “victims are held against their will and compelled to engage in international crypto scams targeting unsuspecting individuals.”
These scam operations typically post advertisements on social media to attract victims with promises of high-paying jobs. However, upon arrival, victims have their passports confiscated and are coerced into scamming innocent individuals. Additionally, if they fail to meet expectations, they may reportedly endure torture, abuse, murder, or be sold to another criminal organization.
FBI Issues Warning
As stated in the press release, the FBI alerted US citizens and those residing or traveling abroad to be vigilant about deceptive job postings associated with labor trafficking. The agency indicated that perpetrators primarily target victims in Asia through employment fraud schemes by advertising fake job opportunities on social media and online job platforms.
The fraudulent positions may include roles in tech support, call center customer service, and beauty salon services, according to the FBI. Attractive benefits, salaries, and housing are offered to entice potential victims.
“Frequently throughout the process, the job location is changed from what was advertised. Upon the arrival of job seekers in the foreign country, criminal elements employ various methods to compel them to participate in cryptocurrency investment scams, such as seizing passports and travel documents, threats of violence, and actual violence.”

The victims are then coerced into repaying escalating debts – including travel costs, lodging, and meals. The situation deteriorates further when they are often sold to other criminal factions.

The FBI has outlined several measures to help individuals avoid falling victim to such schemes. This includes conducting research on the advertised company prior to accepting a job offer, as well as being alert for “vague language” regarding the company or limited details about the employment. Job seekers should also be cautious of advertisements offering unusually high salaries and numerous benefits.
Crypto Scam Rings
This recent warning comes in light of multiple reports regarding crypto scam rings exploiting enslaved individuals. In November of the previous year, the Cambodian government faced significant criticism for allegedly ignoring Chinese crime syndicates that trafficked nearly 100,000 migrant workers and forced them to operate online scams, including fraudulent crypto ICOs.
More recently, the Philippine National Police (PNP) rescued 1,000 victims of human trafficking who were compelled to work up to 18 hours a day for cryptocurrency scams earlier this month. Following the dismantling of the scam operation, authorities apprehended 12 suspected leaders of the ring.
