Online communities are taking a moment to honor the life of Kabosu, the canine behind the Doge meme and the Dogecoin mascot, who passed away at the age of 17 on May 25.

Atsuko Sato, Kabosu’s owner, shared the news in a post on her official blog, conveying her heartfelt appreciation for the affection and support she has received over the years.

This news followed a 2022 announcement regarding Kabosu’s health, which was described as being in a “dangerous position.” However, Sato indicated that Kabosu’s passing was serene and without distress.

“Soft light streamed in through the window, amidst the beautiful morning where birds sing, she gently passed away, as if falling asleep, while being stroked by me,” she stated.

Sato also revealed plans for a farewell gathering to celebrate “Kabo-chan,” set for May 26 at Flower Kaori in Kotsu no Mori, Narita City.

The announcement has resonated throughout the internet, bringing together elements of pop culture, meme culture, and crypto culture to commemorate this loss. Kabosu has undeniably left her mark on the history of the internet.

Doge’s Journey: From Meme to Cryptocurrency to Icon

Kabosu first captured public attention in 2010 when Sato posted photos of her adopted dog on her blog. One particular image of Kabosu, showcasing her skeptical and inquisitive expression, quickly went viral and initiated the “Doge” meme phenomenon.

This iconic image, paired with phrases in broken English, became a fundamental part of early meme culture.

By 2013, the fame of the original meme escalated following the creation of Dogecoin, which adopted Kabosu’s image as its official logo.

Initially intended as a joke, Dogecoin evolved into a widely recognized cryptocurrency. It has been associated with numerous charitable efforts, including clean water initiatives and support for the Jamaican bobsled team.

This also helped legitimize meme coins within the cryptocurrency sector, leading to the emergence of several popular meme coins. Many of these coins featured the Shiba Inu as their mascot, honoring the original meme that ignited the trend.

The original Doge image was also minted as an NFT in 2023, selling for 1,696 , equivalent to $4 million.

Since its sale, the NFT has been subdivided into billions of smaller, tradable units for fractional ownership.

Her influence has even reached political campaigns. For instance, United States President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign announced the hiring of a “master of memes” on May 23.

The Crypto Community Remembers Kabo

The crypto community and Kabosu’s admirers have shared their condolences, posting tributes and cherished memories of the dog who became an internet icon.

The official Shiba Inu token, a competitor to Dogecoin, tweeted a touching tribute highlighting Kabosu’s significance in the crypto realm.
