StarkWare has created a solution aimed at enhancing the of decentralized applications (dApps) utilizing zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) technology.

The StarkWare team introduced ZKThreads, a new scaling framework for dApps developed in collaboration with Cartridge. The primary objective is to establish a standardized framework for the development of decentralized dApps based on ZKP.

ZKThreads is inspired by the “fractal scaling” concept proposed by StarkWare developers in 2021, which aims to enhance the scalability of blockchain systems through a multi-layered method of data processing and validation. The fundamental idea is to decompose large tasks into several smaller, more manageable components that can be independently verified and processed while still being part of a unified system.

ZKThreads offers:

  • the distribution of data and operations across various layers, with each layer responsible for a specific aspect of computation and verification;
  • the application of ZKP at each layer to guarantee the accuracy and security of computations;
  • the integration of the outputs from individual components and their verification at higher layers, facilitating both horizontal and vertical scaling of the system;
  • the interoperability of all system components through standardized interfaces, which minimizes fragmentation and enhances compatibility;
  • an increase in overall system efficiency by segmenting tasks into smaller units, enabling a greater number of transactions to be processed at a reduced cost.

StarkWare intends to equip developers with a standardized toolkit for creating a range of decentralized applications, including native bridges, shared data layers, and security protocols. All applications adhering to the ZKThreads standard will be capable of interacting with one another to establish a secure environment.

Louis Guthmann, Head of Marketing Strategy at StarkWare, informed Cointelegraph that ZKThreads could help prevent funds from being locked. He mentioned that the standard could ensure that situations similar to FTX would not recur, as users would still be able to trade automatically through the underlying layer, even if the centralized exchange ceases operations.

Vitalik Buterin recently stated that to fortify the Ethereum blockchain, it is essential to guarantee direct and seamless interaction among L2 protocols. Developers of protocols Uniswap and Across have proposed a new industry standard, ERC-7683, to ensure cross-chain interoperability within the Ethereum ecosystem.
