Detroit to Allow Cryptocurrency Payments for Taxes and Various Fees
Detroit has announced the initiation of a comprehensive program aimed at modernizing and enhancing the city’s payment infrastructure, which will include the integration of PayPal to facilitate cryptocurrency transactions.
The Office of Treasury in Detroit has revealed plans to accept cryptocurrency for tax payments and various municipal services. PayPal will serve as the technical partner for this initiative. The implementation is anticipated by mid-2025, coinciding with overall enhancements in the operational efficiency of the city’s payment services.
Currently, PayPal supports BTC, ETH, BTH, LTC, and its own stablecoin, PayPal USD (PYUSD), which is pegged to the dollar.
The press release indicates that the adoption of cryptocurrency payments is part of a broader strategy by the city to investigate innovative technologies that could enhance public services, increase civic participation, and stimulate economic development. Specifically, city officials aim to engage blockchain companies in the advancement of municipal services.
Mike Duggan, the Mayor of Detroit, stated that the initiative seeks to foster a technology-friendly atmosphere that will benefit residents and businesses. He emphasized that Detroit is poised to be among the first major U.S. cities to investigate the application of blockchain technologies at the municipal level and to enable residents to utilize cryptocurrency for payments.
Similar initiatives are already underway in the United States, both at the governmental level and among businesses. In September 2024, residents of Louisiana were given the option to pay for public services using cryptocurrency. In November, Sheetz, one of the largest convenience store chains in the U.S., began accepting cryptocurrency for its goods and services.
