Damus, Supported by Jack Dorsey, Risks Removal from Apple’s App Store Due to Bitcoin Tipping Functionality

Apple has issued a notice to the decentralized social networking platform, Damus, threatening removal from the App Store if it does not eliminate a feature that facilitates Bitcoin payments.
Damus, built on the decentralized social media protocol Nostr, was created as an alternative to Twitter and has the support of Jack Dorsey. Since its launch in February this year, the application has encountered considerable challenges in being listed on Apple’s global App Store due to its decentralized characteristics, which are often linked to insufficient content moderation.
Apple Vs Damus
In a recent update, Damus announced on Twitter that the tech company has provided a 14-day deadline to remove a feature known as “Zaps.” This feature enables the distribution of Bitcoin rewards as tips through the integration of the Lightning Network widget. Apple has asserted that this feature violates its in-app purchase policy.
The social media application shared a screenshot of the tech giant’s warning, which highlighted its feature that permits users to send “tips” related to receiving content from digital content creators using a method other than in-app purchase.
Apple stated that “while tips or donations may be optional if they are linked to or associated with receiving digital content, they must utilize in-app purchase in accordance with guidelines.”

“This would be a watershed moment: If people can’t transact freely p2p on their platform, this has huge implications for the entire ecosystem of apps with lightning integration and v4v.”
This is not the first instance of Damus facing issues. Last month, the app was removed from Apple’s China App Store.
Backlash
Calling on Apple to rectify its error, a creator from Nostr clarified that users on the Damus app are not “receiving content from digital content creators” and that the content is shared on the network through various clients, which is entirely free for all.
He further emphasized that users are not “paying for the content” and that “nothing is being purchased.”
Numerous community members pointed out that Twitter itself also has a tipping feature and accused Apple of favoritism.
