Cybercriminals Acquire $1.58 Billion in Cryptocurrency in First Half of 2024

The total worth of crypto-assets taken between January and late July 2024 surpassed $1.58 billion, marking an 84% increase compared to the value of assets stolen during the same timeframe in 2023. In contrast, the volume of illegal crypto transactions has decreased by nearly 20% since the start of this year.

As per Chainalysis’ mid-year analysis, the volume of crypto transactions categorized as illicit dropped by 19.6%, from $20.9 billion in January 2024 to $16.7 billion by the end of July. The overall value of stolen crypto-assets nearly doubled compared to the first half of 2023, rising from $857 million to $1.58 billion.

Experts attribute this trend to the increase in the average value of stolen assets per incident, which is directly linked to the rapid rise in throughout 2024. This year, each incident cost the an average of $10.6 million, whereas during the same period last year, this amount was nearly 80% lower at $5.9 million. In 2024, saw an approximate increase of 130%, climbing from around $26,000 in H1 2023 to about $60,000 in 2024. Notably, analysts also observed that BTC’s proportion of stolen funds rose from 30% to 40% this year.

In the first half of 2024, ransomware proved to be the most lucrative avenue for cybercriminals. In the initial six months of 2024, the total amount paid due to ransomware reached $459.8 million, compared to $449.1 million during the same period last year.

The report further indicates that the number of ransomware attacks increased by 10% in 2024 relative to the previous year, although the number of successful attacks of this nature declined by 27.29%. The demands made by cybercriminals saw a significant rise, with the largest ransom this year reaching $75 million, which is 96% higher than in 2023 and 335% more than in 2022.

Recently, analysts from Chainalysis have noted a rise in the sophistication of money laundering techniques utilizing cryptocurrencies.
