Cyberattacks Rise by 46% in 2024
The incidence of cyberattacks in 2024 rose by 46% in comparison to 2023. Each month, over 1 billion threats are thwarted by various cybersecurity measures. Scams and malicious advertisements represent over 87% of attacks on desktop systems and 93% on mobile devices.
A report from Gen Digital, a prominent software developer behind the Norton, Avast, and Avira antivirus solutions, indicates that the number of cyberattacks surged by 46% this year relative to 2023. Despite a roughly 7% reduction in cybercriminal activities during Q2, around 28.8% of active users encounter cyber threats.
The report reveals that approximately 3.05 billion cyberattacks were intercepted between April and June 2024, reflecting a 10.6% decrease from Q1. The volume of blocked URLs rose by 23.6% to 643 million. Analysts observed that nearly 95% of all cyberattacks are executed via Internet browsers.
Gen Digital representatives attribute the decline in cybercrime during Q2 2024 to proactive actions taken by law enforcement agencies. In May 2024, a significant operation named Endgame was executed by Europol in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Justice. This operation effectively curtailed the activities of major botnet operators IcedID, SmokeLoader, and Trickbot.
The report indicates that the predominant types of cyberattacks in 2024 are scams and malvertising. Fraudulent attacks via desktop devices constituted 61.7% of all cyberattacks, marking an 11% decrease from the previous quarter. Conversely, the proportion of fraud schemes carried out through mobile devices in Q2 2024 was 77.2% of all such attacks, representing a 25% decline over the quarter.
Analysts from Gen Digital also reported a 6% rise in malvertising usage. The report emphasizes the role of AI bots employed by cybercriminals to enhance existing fraud schemes and devise new ones. Specifically, AI technologies enable fraudsters to produce human-like voice messages and video presentations using footage of well-known figures. AI bots are also being extensively utilized by criminals in pig butchering schemes and romance scams.
The Gen Digital report underscores that in Q2 2024, there will be an increase in the deployment of various malware aimed at stealing user data. Analysts cautioned that users frequently download malware that grants attackers access to their personal information through the PlayStore and banking applications.
In the initial eight months of 2024, hackers successfully pilfered over $1.2 billion in cryptocurrency, with $63 million taken in August through phishing attacks.
