Cyber Ransomware Generated $1 Billion in Profits for Criminals
In the previous year, ransomware incidents led to unprecedented cryptocurrency payments exceeding $1 billion from both individuals and various organizations.
As reported by Chainalysis analysts, ransomware received over $1 billion in cryptocurrency payments from victims last year, marking a substantial rise from the $567 million in losses documented in 2022.
The effectiveness of cybercriminals is linked to the increasing sophistication of their attacks and their focus on large entities. For instance, similar security breaches were noted at the BBC and British Airways. Nearly 80% of the overall ransom payments were made up of transactions that surpassed $1 million.
The landscape was also shaped by the emergence of the Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) market and the rise in the number of attackers. Notable examples of such software include Phobos and ALPHV-BlackCat. The availability of these tools facilitates more widespread attacks, involving large criminal organizations, smaller hacking groups, and individual perpetrators.
Analysts highlight Cl0p as one of the most significant malware variants. It took advantage of zero-day vulnerabilities in MOVEit, a file transfer application commonly utilized by numerous IT firms. This breach led to the collection of over $100 million in ransom. In 2023, 538 new ransomware variants were identified.
About one-third of all misappropriated funds are transferred to centralized cryptocurrency exchanges. It was recently disclosed that an AI service can produce counterfeit documents for bypassing KYC processes on such platforms for a mere $15.
