Crypto Phishing and Manipulation Techniques Have Become More Threatening
Cybercriminals are infiltrating the accounts of prominent Web3 figures, compromising email addresses from major online services and potentially gaining access to the information of a vast number of users.
Analysts from Cybernews have identified the largest data breach to date from widely used platforms globally, referred to as the Mother of All Breaches (MOAB). This database aggregates data from 3,800 separate leaks and includes personal information from over 26 billion accounts. It encompasses data from users of Tencent, Weibo, MySpace, Twitter, Deezer, LinkedIn, Telegram, and numerous other services.
Cybernews has developed a dedicated tool that assists in checking for personal information within the MOAB records.
As per analysts, the personal information of individuals affiliated with government entities from various nations has also been exposed online. The MOAB data could facilitate a broad spectrum of future attacks, and it is possible that it is already being exploited. On January 25, a hacker accessed the X account of Staci Warden, CEO of the Algorand Foundation, posting mocking, provocative, and offensive tweets. Previously, on January 9, the SEC’s X account was compromised, resulting in a false announcement regarding the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs, which significantly influenced the market.
These incidents are not singular occurrences. Cybercriminals frequently utilize social media accounts belonging to well-known individuals and organizations to disseminate phishing links. Email addresses from reputable brands are also employed for similar purposes. Since January 23, users of the Patreon platform have received emails containing phishing links that purportedly directed them to exclusive airdrops of Chainlink, Solana, Manta Network, and Sui tokens. According to Patreon’s support team, the issue has been addressed, though the extent of the damage remains unclear.
Scammers have pilfered over $580,000 in cryptocurrency by breaching the MailerLite email marketing service. They accessed email addresses and databases of significant Web3 companies, including Cointelegraph, WalletConnect, De.Fi, and Token Terminal, using this information to distribute phishing links.
