Crypto Mining Initiative Pulled Back Following Significant Public Resistance in Minnesota
Revolve Labs retracted its proposal to create a crypto-mining facility in Windom, Minnesota, on September 26, due to resistance from local residents.
As reported by The Minnesota Star Tribune, the decision followed a public hearing where community members expressed their concerns regarding the noise produced by crypto-mining activities.
Resistance to Mining Facility in Minnesota
Residents were apprehensive about noise pollution and its possible effects on property values. The company referenced its dedication to aligning with community interests as a rationale for withdrawing the application.
“Our commitment is to operate in a manner that aligns with community values and priorities, and we acknowledge that collaboration is vital to achieving this,” stated Revolve Labs senior operations manager Jeff St. Onge.

The company had originally suggested the facility near Cottonwood Lake, anticipating $35,000 monthly in service fees for the city of Windom. The initiative was projected to provide economic advantages to the region but encountered considerable opposition from residents.
During a public hearing in August, many of the roughly 100 attendees raised concerns about the company’s current operation in Glencoe, Minnesota, where residents had reported excessive noise from crypto mining machinery.
Concerns extended beyond noise pollution; residents also questioned the overall implications of crypto mining on property values and the potential environmental consequences linked to the continuous power consumption of such facilities.
In light of the backlash, local officials suggested a moratorium on new crypto mining permits in the county, reflecting a broader reluctance to endorse similar projects in the future.
Local Community’s Mixed Reactions
The report highlighted varied responses from local residents following Revolve Labs’ decision to withdraw its proposal. While some felt relieved, others were disheartened by the loss of potential economic opportunities.
One resident remarked that the community was “overjoyed the current worry is over,” while others pointed out that the project’s withdrawal might result in missed financial benefits for the town.
