Crypto Forecasts for 2025: Where Are the Top Opportunities?

Bitcoin to the moon. Ether to the moon. Solana to the moon. Predictions for 2025 are dominated by all-time highs across the cryptocurrency landscape.
Beyond historical values, what are the key industry trends we should monitor in the upcoming year? Cryptonews has consulted a panel of experts to share their insights.
Alice Liu, head of research at CoinMarketCap, indicated that DeFi is set for a resurgence, as regulations are expected to ease under the Securities and Exchange Commission with Donald Trump beginning his second term.
“The DeFi sector has the potential to increase by 3-5X in 2025, provided there’s a crypto-friendly regulatory environment. Since the election date, the total market capitalization of the DeFi sector has already risen from $77 billion to $154 billion. The leading DEXs on major L1s, staking/liquid restaking, payments, wallets, etc., will be at the forefront to capture this growth wave.”
Alice is also focusing on the tokenization of real-world assets, with projects centered on tokenized commodities emerging in the United Arab Emirates, the U.S. leading in money market funds, and Europe integrating real estate onto blockchains.
“A new wave of regulatory and licensing support will help advance RWA in 2025. We are likely to see the first $1 billion tokenized fund in crypto history in the coming months — the current top two are the Hashnote USYC ($704 million) and the BlackRock BUIDL (>$600 million).”
Excessive speculation and volatility among smaller altcoins are typical indicators of bull markets — and Alice informed Cryptonews that this cycle will be no exception.
“Meme coins will continue to present opportunities for rapid 100X gains. A newer generation of fair-launch products is emerging to improve upon Pump.enjoy and replace it. These products will facilitate more engaging interactions within meme communities.”
Institutions Turn to Crypto
Neil Bergquist, CEO and co-founder of Coinme, informed Cryptonews that institutions will increase their exposure to crypto once Gary Gensler’s term at the SEC concludes on inauguration day: January 20.
“We’re already witnessing this trend. Morgan Stanley’s recent announcement of $272.1 million in Bitcoin exchange-traded fund holdings, along with Goldman Sachs and DRW Capital’s combined $600 million investment in spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, marked a significant turning point in Wall Street’s attitude toward cryptocurrency earlier this year — a trend I expect to gain momentum in 2025.”
However, Wall Street’s acceptance of digital assets comes with implications, as YouHodler’s chief of markets Ruslan Lienkha cautioned that crypto’s performance will increasingly depend on equities.
“If stock markets remain stable or continue to grow, we may see new all-time highs for major cryptocurrencies. Conversely, a significant correction or a medium-term bearish trend in equities would likely extend to the cryptocurrency market as well, given the rising correlation between traditional and digital assets. In such a scenario, digital assets would reflect the broader market’s downward trend.”
Bull markets also create opportunities for opportunistic criminals to target greedy or inexperienced investors — and Chainalysis director of investigations Phil Larratt advised that caution is essential.
“We will likely observe an increase in investment scams, Ponzi schemes, ICOs, approval phishing, and the use of drainers. The current bull market we are experiencing is expected to continue into 2025, so the proliferation of such financial crimes will be a significant challenge facing the industry next year.”
The rapidly evolving nature of crypto makes it challenging to predict in certain respects. The initiatives and trends that will dominate 2025 likely do not yet exist.
However, a strong performance from Bitcoin and Ether ETFs will likely lead to a surge of applications (and approvals) for funds tracking the values of smaller cryptocurrencies like XRP and Solana.
It also seems inevitable that we will see countries around the globe begin to seriously explore launching a strategic Bitcoin reserve — either by retaining digital assets seized from criminals or purchasing some outright. This may occur regardless of whether Trump follows through on this policy.
Additionally, a bonus prediction from me — keep a close watch on MicroStrategy. The company has executed a clever strategy by borrowing aggressively to accumulate as much BTC as possible, with analysts suggesting that an “infinite money glitch” has begun to emerge. However, nothing lasts forever, and the next bear market could have significant consequences for this publicly traded company — and Bitcoin.
