Crypto Exchange WazirX Targeted in Breach, Approximately $235 Million Taken
The cryptocurrency wallet belonging to the Indian exchange WazirX has been breached. Approximately $235 million in assets were moved to a new address, converted into various tokens, and subsequently transferred using Tornado Cash.
Cyvers, a group focused on enhancing security within the Web3 environment, identified multiple suspicious transactions linked to the cryptocurrency wallet address of the Indian exchange WazirX. Following the detection of this unusual activity, analysts determined that the Safe wallet utilized by the exchange had been compromised.
According to Cyvers, $234.9 million in digital assets were extracted from the WazirX wallet. The majority of the assets in the wallet were held in USDT, PEPE, and GALA. The attacker converted these into ETH through the crypto mixer Tornado Cash. As per ZachXBT, an anonymous researcher and blockchain security expert, the address to which the WazirX funds were transferred still contains approximately $100 million in SHIB tokens, $52 million in ETH, and $11 million in MATIC. Additionally, the attacker’s address includes $4.7 million in FLOKI, $3.2 million in FTM, $2.8 million in LINK, $2.3 million in FET, among other tokens.
In light of the incident, the WazirX team has temporarily halted withdrawals on the platform, stating that an investigation is currently in progress and updates will be provided as the situation evolves. There has been no information released regarding the security of WazirX users’ funds at this time.
A significant vulnerability was recently identified on the Kraken crypto exchange, which facilitated the withdrawal of over $3 million in digital assets. However, white hat hackers from CertiK were responsible for this incident, and the assets were subsequently returned.
