Artist Phillip Banks, the originator of the viral “Just a Chill Guy” meme, has revealed intentions to implement copyright protection for his well-known character.

This announcement follows the meme’s rapid ascent in value, featuring a relaxed, anthropomorphic dog characterized by a distinctive grin and hands in pockets, which has captivated the crypto community.

“Just putting it out there, chill guy has been copyrighted. like, legally. I’ll be issuing takedowns on for-profit related things over the next few days,” Banks stated on X.

He clarified that this does not pertain to brand accounts utilizing the meme as part of a trend. “Mainly unauthorized merchandise and shitcoins,” he specified.

The “Just a Chill Guy” meme gained momentum in late 2023 after Banks first shared the illustration on social media.

The character quickly connected with audiences, transforming into a viral phenomenon on platforms such as TikTok and X.

Recognized for its laid-back and easygoing nature, the humanoid dog became emblematic of a relaxed approach to life.

The character’s viral success has also permeated the cryptocurrency sector, leading to the introduction of the Solana-based memecoin, $CHILLGUY.

As the coin’s mascot, the “Chill Guy” character was instrumental in the token’s remarkable surge.

The memecoin’s value skyrocketed an incredible 538% within just two days, elevating its market capitalization from $11.5 million on Monday to $488 million by Wednesday.

One trader, recognized by the wallet address 9zW, reportedly transformed a modest investment of just over $1,100 into unrealized gains surpassing $1 million.

Initially investing $233.89 during the token’s early phase on the Pump.fun meme coin launchpad, the trader took advantage of the coin’s 38,800% increase to a $4.4 million within 30 hours.

The excitement did not end there.

Despite a brief pullback, $CHILLGUY experienced another surge, prompting the trader to make further investments totaling $867.35.

By the time the token reached its peak on Wednesday, the trader had sold $411,500 worth of holdings while still retaining tokens valued at $636,942.
