Caroline Ellison Seeks Court Protection for Supporters’ Identities Ahead of Sentencing on September 24

Caroline Ellison, the former CEO of Alameda Research and a past associate of Sam Bankman-Fried, is seeking to have the identities of individuals who submitted letters of support for her prior to her sentencing on September 24 kept confidential.

In a recent court filing, Ellison is requesting “an order allowing the redaction of specific sensitive information” in advance of her “upcoming sentencing submission” scheduled for Tuesday, September 24.
“Ms. Ellison is asking for permission to redact the names and personally identifiable information of third parties, including certain individuals who have provided letters of support on her behalf; some irrelevant medical details; and certain information regarding Ms. Ellison’s current living circumstances that could expose her to ongoing harassment,” the court document indicated.

Ellison, who pleaded guilty to seven criminal charges related to her involvement with FTX’s failed sister company in December 2022, was regarded as the prosecution’s key witness when she testified against her former partner Sam Bankman-Fried during his rapid fraud trial in the fall of 2023.
Examination by Sam Bankman-Fried
Throughout her testimony, Ellison predominantly depicted her fraudulent ex-boyfriend as a controlling, power-driven, and image-conscious digital asset entrepreneur willing to jeopardize customer funds to align with his own ideals.
Ellison acknowledged her participation in the extensive crypto fraud scheme, although she publicly expressed regret and visibly broke down while testifying as part of her plea agreement with federal prosecutors.
Bankman-Fried attempted to undermine Ellison’s testimony against him by disclosing her private diary entries to the New York Times, leading presiding Judge Lewis A. Kaplan to revoke the bail of the former crypto mogul prior to his trial.
“Ms. Ellison has been the subject of significant media attention and online intrigue since the beginning of this case, including from Sam Bankman-Fried’s repeated attempts to release Ms. Ellison’s private information to the media,” the court filing continued. “Because Ms. Ellison’s friends should not be subjected to harassment and doxing due to their letters to the Court, Ms. Ellison seeks permission to redact their names and other identifying details from the publicly filed version of the letters and her sentencing memorandum.”
Ellison faces a potential total of 110 years in prison for her involvement in the crime; however, given her cooperative and compelling testimony, she may not face any prison time at all.
