Bluesky User Base Expands Following X Ban in Brazil
Decentralized social platform Bluesky gained 1 million new users within three days following the Brazilian Supreme Court’s prohibition of access to X in the nation.
Bluesky, a decentralized social communication service, welcomed 1 million new users in just three days. This increase in interest for the Web3 platform is associated with the prohibition of the widely-used social network X in Brazil.
Three days prior, the Brazilian Supreme Court enacted a temporary suspension of the platform in the area. This significant action was triggered by Elon Musk’s refusal to restrict certain accounts that breached local disinformation regulations.
Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes instructed the Brazilian telecommunications authority to promptly halt the platform’s operations within the country. Apple and Google were allotted five days to eliminate X from their app stores and prevent its usage on iOS and Android devices. Local users attempting to access the platform via VPN could face fines of 50,000 Brazilian reals (~$8,900). The ban will persist until X designates a legal representative in Brazil and settles the penalties for infringing Brazilian laws.
The court’s ruling incited anger among X users in Brazil, who constitute at least one-tenth of the nation’s population, as reported by the BBC. Consequently, numerous Brazilians began seeking alternative platforms for communication. Bluesky, which presents itself as a decentralized counterpart to conventional social networks, emerged as a primary beneficiary of this development. The swift expansion of its user base over the three days following the court’s ban in Brazil clearly demonstrates that Brazilians are increasingly pursuing options that provide greater freedom and reduced censorship.
Decentralized social network Bluesky was established by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, whose innovative concepts are garnering significant public attention.
