Telefónica, a prominent telecommunications service provider, has collaborated with blockchain firm Nova Labs to launch Helium Mobile Hotspots, a distributed ledger technology (DLT) initiative aimed at broadening mobile coverage for Movistar users in Mexico City and Oaxaca.

This initiative utilizes the OpenWifi standard created by the Telecom Infra Project (TIP), a consortium of telecom organizations focused on developing technical solutions for high-quality connectivity. By incorporating blockchain, select Movistar customers in Mexico will gain access to high-speed internet and connectivity through SIM card authentication.

José Juan Haro, Chief Wholesale and Public Affairs Officer at Telefónica, stated that Helium Mobile Hotspots will reduce telecom infrastructure costs along with capital and operational expenditures. Concurrently, the integration of blockchain will enable the company to lessen its environmental impact. Furthermore, this solution is expected to enhance mobile coverage in the area in the future.

Amir Haleem, CEO of Nova Labs, mentioned that Helium Mobile Hotspot will address one of the critical challenges in telecommunications: facilitating rapid and secure data transfer without raising service costs for end users.

The potential of blockchain technologies is being actively explored across various industries. A DLT system has been implemented in Brazil’s energy sector, Armenian historians are utilizing blockchain to safeguard cultural heritage, and NASA intends to utilize decentralized systems to ensure the safety and reliability of data from space missions.
