Austrian cryptocurrency platform Bitpanda has formed a partnership with the renowned Italian football club AC Milan. As stated in the exchange’s announcement on Aug. 14, this agreement will position Bitpanda as the club’s premium partner and “official partner.”

Strategic Move for Expansion in Italy

Through this collaboration, Bitpanda will benefit from prominent branding at the San Siro stadium, featuring TV-relevant LED displays, as well as through AC Milan’s extensive media outlets. Additionally, there will be exclusive events for the Bitpanda community, offering opportunities to win game tickets, merchandise, and invitations to VIP gatherings.

“Few brands endure the test of time and retain the affection and trust that AC Milan’s 500 million supporters have for their club. They represent the principles of long-term dedication, legacy building, and not pursuing immediate rewards,” remarked Eric Demuth, co-founder and CEO of Bitpanda, regarding the new alliance.

“As we aim to strengthen our position as a market leader in Italy, only one partner was suitable for us. Who else but the seven-time champion of the European Champions League? Who else but the Rossoneri?”

Bitpanda Utilizes Sports Partnerships for Expansion

Bitpanda has strategically chosen to concentrate its marketing initiatives on sponsoring leading European sports, establishing several partnerships in recent months. This strategy aligns with the company’s objective to enhance brand visibility and connect with a broader audience in the European market.

A notable instance of this strategy is the prominent partnership with German football club FC Bayern Munich, formed in January 2024. This collaboration has significantly boosted Bitpanda’s brand awareness on the global stage.

Beyond football, Bitpanda has also expanded into other sports. The company has partnered with distinguished athletes such as Swiss tennis star Stanislas Wawrinka and French rugby player Antoine Dupont in May and July 2024, respectively. Furthermore, the exchange sponsors various tennis events, including the Boss Open in Stuttgart, the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle, and the Mallorca Championships.

Leading Exchanges Invest in Sports Sponsorships

Following a similar approach to Bitpanda, other prominent cryptocurrency exchanges are also making significant advancements in the realm of sports partnerships. On August 14, Crypto.com entered into a multi-year agreement with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to become the official sponsor of the Champions League, Europe’s premier club soccer tournament.

In 2023, Crypto.com established partnerships with individual football clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain and Formula 1 racing teams like Aston Martin.

Another instance is the naming rights agreement between the NBA’s Miami Heat basketball team and the now-defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX. In 2021, the team’s arena was renamed the FTX Arena. However, the partnership was abruptly ended in late 2022 when FTX filed for bankruptcy. The agreement, originally intended to last until 2040, was one of the most lucrative naming rights deals in sports history.
