The Bitcoin Core developer indicated that the inventors of Ordinals were “spamming” the Bitcoin blockchain by taking advantage of a weakness in the network. The project team is gearing up for an update to the core network, after which it will be impossible to generate new digital artifacts and BRC-20 tokens.

Luke Dashjr, a Bitcoin Core Developer, asserts that the creators of Bitcoin Ordinals and BRC-20 tokens are taking advantage of a flaw in the Bitcoin network, which might be resolved next year.

He states that the creation of digital artifacts is feasible solely because Bitcoin Core does not impose restrictions on the volume of extra data that can be added to transactions. The originators of Ordinals and BRC-20 tokens are actively taking advantage of this flaw by executing nothing more than DDoS attacks on the network of the first cryptocurrency, effectively spamming the blockchain, Dashjr contends. He also maintains that Ordinals are detrimental to Bitcoin and its users, with a significant and irreversible impact.

The developer disclosed that the recent Bitcoin Knots v25.1 update addressed that issue. According to Dashjr, once analogous modifications are implemented in the core code, Ordinals will no longer have the capacity to “spam” the Bitcoin blockchain, making their creation impossible. Existing digital artifacts will remain unchanged. The developer is hopeful that the vulnerability will be resolved in the forthcoming v27 Bitcoin Core release, planned for 2024.

The Bitcoin Ordinals protocol was introduced in January 2023, resulting in an overload of the Bitcoin blockchain network. Additionally, the issuance of BRC-20 tokens further exacerbated the burden on the Bitcoin blockchain network.
