Bitcoin Drops Below $30K as SEC Cites ‘Inadequate’ Details in Spot ETF Filings

1

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has reportedly warned that recent spot ETF filings by major financial institutions, including Fidelity and BlackRock, may lack sufficient detail.

The regulator has a long history of rejecting such products in the United States, and its ongoing scrutiny of the crypto sector is likely contributing to the hesitation.

  • BlackRock made headlines a few weeks ago when it filed to launch a Bitcoin spot ETF in the US, which, if approved, would be the first of its kind in the country.
  • The company has a strong track record, having faced only one proposed ETF rejection by the SEC nearly a decade ago.
  • The move was widely viewed as a significant positive development for the industry, potentially paving the way for other players, with Fidelity submitting its own application shortly after.
  • However, a new report by the Wall Street Journal, citing individuals familiar with the matter, indicates that the US securities regulator is not inclined to approve either application.
  • According to the WSJ, the SEC has informed Nasdaq and the CBOE that the applications filed on behalf of BlackRock and Fidelity are not “sufficiently clear and comprehensive.”
  • Given that the agency has previously used this justification to reject multiple Bitcoin spot ETF applications, the news triggered a sharp decline in BTC’s price.
  • The cryptocurrency hovered around the $31,000 level earlier in the day but plummeted by more than $1,000 within an hour of the report’s release, hitting a 10-day low below $30,000.
