Bitcoin Core Developers Identify Security Vulnerabilities in Bitcoin Network
The Bitcoin Core development team has implemented a new policy for revealing vulnerabilities within the Bitcoin network. This initiative is designed to quickly notify the community regarding security concerns related to Bitcoin.
Under the leadership of Antoine Poinsot, the Bitcoin Core developers issued a statement expressing dissatisfaction with the existing system for publicly communicating network vulnerabilities and suggested a revised method for disclosing Bitcoin security issues.
“Historically, the project has not effectively disclosed security-critical bugs,” the developers claim. They argue that this has led the community to erroneously believe that the Bitcoin network is impervious to threats. To rectify this, the Bitcoin Core team has crafted a new policy for revealing critical bugs to enhance communication about Bitcoin security matters.
The new policy seeks to raise awareness regarding the dangers of utilizing outdated versions of Bitcoin Core and establish a standardized process for disclosure that motivates researchers to identify vulnerabilities and report them in a responsible manner.
According to the new framework, vulnerabilities will be categorized into four levels of severity:
- Low: issues that are difficult to exploit or have minimal usability, such as a wallet bug that necessitates access to the victim’s device.
- Medium: issues with limited consequences, like a local network remote crash.
- High: issues with considerable consequences, such as a local network remote crash or code execution.
- Critical: vulnerabilities that jeopardize the overall integrity of the network, including bugs that could result in inflation or theft of coins.
Most vulnerabilities will be disclosed two weeks following the release of a patched version, with the exception of critical vulnerabilities, where the disclosure timeline will be assessed individually.
