Benchmark experts named the number of bitcoins susceptible to the quantum threat, 2026/01/31 15:57:59

Analysts at corporate consultancy Benchmark said that between one and two million bitcoins could be vulnerable to attacks carried out using quantum computers.
Benchmark described the quantum threat to Bitcoin as long-term and manageable, calling on asset owners not to panic. The network of the first cryptocurrency is theoretically vulnerable to quantum attacks, but real risks will appear in decades, not years – developers have enough time to adapt the blockchain, consulting analysts say.
Powerful quantum computers will, in theory, be able to calculate the private key for a crypto wallet based on the public one, but the threat only affects coins at addresses where the public keys have already been revealed.
Benchmark considers Bitcoin’s architecture to be quite flexible. Experts recalled successful network upgrades like Taproot, which improved efficiency and performance, and assumed that the network’s transition to quantum stability will be smooth and manageable.
Earlier, a group of Casa developers led by Jameson Lopp published on the GitHub portal a way to protect the network of the first cryptocurrency from possible threats from quantum computers.
