Archetyp Market, which had been operational for five years, was recognized for its use of the privacy coin Monero (XMR), a cryptocurrency preferred for illicit transactions due to its privacy features.

Europol reported that the platform had over 600,000 users, more than 17,000 product listings, and a transaction volume surpassing €250 million (approximately $287 million), primarily driven by drug sales including cocaine, MDMA, and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.

The agency characterized the takedown as the result of years of investigative efforts, which included crypto-tracing and financial surveillance.

However, TRM Labs, in a report published the same day, pointed out that the broader ecosystem remains adaptable.

“Despite ongoing enforcement, dark web operators are moving towards peer-to-peer channels like Telegram and Signal,” TRM Labs stated.

These decentralized models not only diminish dependence on central marketplaces but also reduce fees and expedite transactions—making them more challenging to disrupt.

The firm referenced the Hydra takedown in 2022 as a recent illustration of the sector’s resilience.

A new Russian market quickly surfaced, indicating that while rebrands and exit scams are prevalent, comprehensive rebuilds are still possible.

Archetyp’s significance placed it alongside former darknet leaders like Silk Road and Dream Market.

Its willingness to list fentanyl and other synthetic opioids contributed to its infamy. However, its downfall, similar to others before it, may not signify the end for the operators involved.

TRM Labs recognized the importance of Europol’s actions but highlighted the constraints of such successes.

Operators are increasingly utilizing pseudonymous domain registrations, rapid rebranding, and high-risk crypto exchanges to conceal their activities.

“The Archetyp takedown is a clear victory,” TRM Labs concluded.

“However, staying ahead of the next generation of darknet threats will necessitate ongoing international collaboration, technological advancements, and real-time blockchain monitoring.”

In June, US law enforcement seized cryptocurrency linked to BidenCash, the notorious dark web marketplace accused of selling over 15 million stolen credit cards and personal information.

The international operation dismantled approximately 145 darknet and traditional internet domains associated with the marketplace.

Additionally, the DOJ recently confiscated over $24 million in cryptocurrency from a Russian national accused of developing and operating the Qakbot malware.
