Approximately 1 Billion Individuals Expected to Hold Cryptocurrency by 2024

As of December 2023, the worldwide count of cryptocurrency owners reached 575 million, marking a 33% increase over the past year. Analysts anticipate that in the coming year, the number of crypto users could approach 1 billion.

A report from Bitfinex indicates that the total number of global crypto users expanded at an average rate of 2.8% per month throughout 2023. By December 1, the count of digital asset owners had reached 575 million.

At the start of this year, the global tally of crypto users stood at 432 million. This figure has risen by 33% in nearly a year, reflecting the increasing popularity and worldwide acceptance of cryptocurrencies.

When comparing the current trends in the cryptocurrency market to the peak user engagement during the bull market of 2021, Bitfinex analysts forecast that the number of crypto users in 2024 could rise to 950 million. They suggest that next year’s average monthly growth rate might potentially escalate to 3.8-4.4%, which could result in a doubling of the current number of crypto owners.

The analysts identified the approval of spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, which are expected to enhance investment activity in the market, as a key driver that could elevate user interest in cryptocurrencies next year.

However, not all analysts share such an optimistic view of the crypto market. According to Statista, the global number of digital asset owners may not reach 1 billion until at least 2028. Nevertheless, Statista analysts concur with the industry’s positive dynamics in the upcoming year, predicting an addition of over 250 million new crypto users in 2024.

Approximately half of the global crypto user base holds BTC.
