In Russia, there are over 190,000 illegal miners, while only 5,500 have registered their activities legally, stated Anatoly Aksakov, head of the State Duma Committee on the Financial Market.

He indicated that such a significant number of illegal miners poses challenges for both businesses and the general public. In several regions of Russia, cryptocurrency mining has already been banned due to a shortage of energy resources. Conversely, in areas where there is an excess of electricity, the possibility of legalizing the industry is being considered.

“In these energy-abundant regions, mining equipment will be utilized, and this energy will generate products, including financial contributions to the budget, as legally operating miners will pay taxes,” Aksakov noted.

According to his assessment, the revenue to the federal budget from mining activities could reach “tens of billions of rubles.” He emphasized that a primary objective remains to bring market participants out of the shadows, which would help alleviate the burden on the energy system in problematic regions.

Previously, Nikolai Shulginov, chairman of the State Duma Committee on Energy, reported that, according to data from the electric grid holding company “Rosseti,” the damage from illegal mining last year exceeded 4.7 billion rubles.
