The operator of a decentralized wireless network, World Mobile, has announced that it has acquired licensed spectrum in the United States. This strategic move is a significant milestone in the company’s mission to deliver reliable and affordable internet access to underserved regions across the United States.

The acquisition of up to 20MHz of spectrum in California, New Mexico, Nevada, and Utah strongly supports World Mobile’s ambitions for expansion in the US. The company’s decentralized hybrid-connection model, which combines blockchain technology with aerial and terrestrial infrastructure to provide connectivity at a fraction of the cost of traditional mobile network operators, will be significantly enhanced by this spectrum.

World Mobile CEO Micky Watkins stated: “By securing licensed spectrum, we are indicating our commitment to transform the connectivity landscape in the United States. Acquiring spectrum fortifies our ability to deploy our network and promote a sustainable sharing economy. We are dedicated to leveraging the collective strength of individuals and communities to foster a more inclusive and connected world.”

The acquisition of licensed spectrum by World Mobile aligns with the US government’s initiative to promote nationwide connectivity. A recently announced $42 billion high-speed internet project by President Biden aims to enhance broadband access in low-income and rural areas while also encouraging market competition and affordability.

The Commerce Department has officially allocated funds, granting amounts at the state level ranging from approximately $27 million to over $3.3 billion, primarily based on local requirements.

Following a successful commercial launch in Tanzania and field trials in Kenya, Nigeria, and Mozambique, World Mobile plans to introduce its service in the US later this year. The recent addition of Manoj Kohli, who previously led Softbank India and served as CEO of Bharti Airtel, has strengthened the company’s leadership team. Kohli brings over 40 years of experience in the telecommunications sector.
