Web3 game Gods Unchained introduces 'Sealed Mode' to replicate traditional card game experience.

The game Gods Unchained has introduced a new gameplay format that enables players to compete using semi-random cards they receive at the beginning of a tournament. This format, referred to as “Sealed Mode,” aims to reward highly skilled players, even if they lack an extensive or costly card collection. The announcement of this new format was made through a blog post on September 13.

“Sealed deck” tournaments are prevalent in physical collectible trading card games like Magic: The Gathering, but are relatively uncommon in digital trading card games.

As stated in the post, players can join sealed mode by paying an entry fee of 15 Gods Unchained ($GODS) tokens, which was approximately valued at $2.65 at the time of publication. Upon payment, they receive a random selection of three gods to base their deck around. Additionally, they are given 60 random cards sourced from various Gods Unchained card sets, including Etherbots, Mortal Judgement, Winter Wanderlands, and others.

While the card pool is semi-random, it also includes a minimum number of specific types of cards to guarantee that a playable deck can be constructed. For instance, each pool contains at least 12 cards that cost 3 mana or less.

From the pool of 60 cards, players are required to create a minimum 30-card deck, as mentioned in the post. Players must construct their decks solely from the provided cards and are not permitted to use cards from their personal collection.

Once a deck is built, players compete until they either lose three matches or achieve seven wins. Those with superior records at the conclusion of the tournament earn greater rewards compared to those with poorer records. Certain cosmetic rewards are exclusive to sealed mode and can only be acquired by players who win four matches or more.

‘Sealed mode’ in Gods Unchained is designed to be akin to ‘sealed deck’ or ‘draft’ tournaments found in traditional card games like Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokemon, and Magic: The Gathering. Players of these games frequently utilize sealed formats to gather cards. However, since most digital card games do not permit players to ‘own’ their cards in a significant way, sealed tournaments have been largely absent in the digital card game landscape. In Gods Unchained, each card is represented by a nonfungible token stored on the Immutable X network, a layer-2 solution for Ethereum.

Gods Unchained was among the first Web3 video games launched by Immutable. In May, Immutable announced it was working on a wallet application named “Passport” that would enable gamers to log in without the need to remember seed phrases. On August 15, Immutable launched its zkEVM testnet, which it claimed would assist in scaling Ethereum for gamers.
