This significant initiative aligns with Toyota’s Mobility 3.0 vision, which the company asserts will integrate vehicles more closely with public infrastructure. Toyota’s Blockchain Lab is developing this concept to utilize blockchain for managing vehicles as digital accounts.
This approach enhances vehicles’ programmability, security, and service orientation. They refer to it as Mobility-Oriented Accounts (MOA), utilizing Ethereum’s ERC-4337 standard.
The Motivation Behind Toyota’s Blockchain Move
In April 2023, Toyota introduced the Mobility 3.0 concept. They envision a future where vehicles operate within public environments, interacting with traffic signals, other vehicles, and even pedestrians.
The objective is to redefine vehicles as more than mere personal assets – they evolve into semi-public entities. Blockchain technology can facilitate this transformation by enabling information sharing among numerous stakeholders, enhancing efficiency and transparency.
In practical terms, we identify a vehicle by its make, model, color, and driving characteristics. Digitally, this entails overlaying the states of both the driver and the vehicle. The concept is to represent these states on a blockchain, allowing each vehicle to function like an account.
With MOA, Toyota asserts that vehicles become service entities, prepared for future autonomous operation. Imagine every vehicle, including the one ahead of you, possessing its own account, linking effortlessly to users and other systems.
Toyota believes this could render driverless vehicles more feasible, eliminating the need for human control and enabling independent operation.
How MOA Works
Traditionally, establishing a blockchain account for a vehicle involves storing a private key within the vehicle. However, this presents significant risks. If the private key is lost, the account is also lost.
Additionally, these accounts have restricted functionalities on the blockchain, requiring other contracts to manage vehicle information, which complicates the process.
Toyota’s solution? Employ ERC-4337. This standard decouples authentication from key management, ensuring the account remains secure even if the private key is lost. It enables safer and more adaptable account management.
By maintaining states that can be accessed externally, it becomes feasible to manage vehicle information, such as usage history and maintenance records, in a transparent and efficient manner.
MOA also permits multiple entities to authorize operations, rather than just one. This means that vehicle users, owners, manufacturers, dealers, and government bodies can all participate in the approval process for vehicle transactions.
This multi-entity approval enhances the security and accountability of vehicle operations. A notable feature of ERC-4337 is the CREATE2 opcode, which allows addresses to be established prior to the account’s deployment.
This connects existing vehicle identification systems with on-chain addresses, streamlining the entire process.
