Shaoxing to Launch Significant Digital Yuan Distribution Before Asian Games Event0

The city of Shaoxing in China is preparing for a digital yuan giveaway themed around the Asian Games, coinciding with the country’s efforts to highlight its central bank digital currency (). Under the initiative titled “Welcome to the Asian Games,” Shaoxing will distribute roughly $5.6 million in digital yuan tokens to its residents.

As reported by China News Network, numerous local businesses in Shaoxing, including supermarkets, hospitals, and transportation services, have already implemented digital yuan payment systems. The adoption of digital yuan payment codes, via the QR codes from the digital yuan app, has become a favored method of payment among many residents.

Taking place in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, the Asian Games were originally set for September of the previous year but were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Shaoxing will serve as a significant venue for five events during the Asian Games, which include baseball, softball, and volleyball.

In preparation for the forthcoming event, the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) has enhanced its official digital yuan app, enabling users to utilize the CBDC for payments on the Hangzhou Metro. Additionally, Shaoxing’s metro system has been updated to accept the digital yuan, and rail connections between the two cities now allow passengers to use the CBDC for transactions.

The PBoC aims to further promote adoption in the province prior to the games starting on September 22. The CBDC giveaway is organized by the Shaoxing Municipal Bureau of Finance, with tokens to be allocated through a games-themed lucky draw. Residents who “win” will receive approximately $14 worth of the CBDC. To be eligible for participation, individuals must possess digital yuan wallets and be registered residents of Shaoxing.

This initiative follows recent announcements from the China Merchants Bank, which is collaborating with the Civil Aviation Administration Clearing Center to launch a CBDC platform. This platform will facilitate businesses in using the digital yuan for purchasing business air tickets.

As China continues to advocate for its digital yuan and investigates various applications, the Asian Games present a notable opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities and potential of the CBDC. With the impending giveaway and growing adoption in Shaoxing and Hangzhou, the country is making significant progress towards a digital future supported by its central bank digital currency.
