Sega Withdraws Interest in Blockchain Gaming Initiatives

- Sega has no intentions of incorporating blockchain or cryptocurrency into its products in the foreseeable future.
- The company reportedly made its initial foray into blockchain gaming in November of the previous year.
In order to avoid what it perceives as a dilution of its content, gaming powerhouse Sega has announced a strategic retreat from its blockchain initiatives.
Co-chief operating officer Shuji Utsumi has indicated that the Tokyo-based firm, recognized for titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Virtua Fighter, has no intentions of integrating blockchain or cryptocurrency into its offerings in the foreseeable future.
Blockchain Games Are Uninteresting
Utsumi noted that Sega has also paused its aspirations to develop blockchain-based video games. Many anticipated that the company would begin exploring blockchain technology, NFTs, and possibly even cryptocurrency, similar to competitors like Ubisoft and Square Enix.
Shuji Utsumi remarked:
“The action in play-to-earn games is uninteresting. He added, What’s the purpose if games are not enjoyable?”
Additionally, the COO mentioned that Sega is currently waiting for assurance that blockchain products are “truly going to succeed” in the gaming sector. Sega registered “Sega NFT” in Japan in December 2021, around the time when cryptocurrency markets reached their peak, after the company began exploring the potential applications of blockchain in its games and franchises the prior year.
Sega reportedly made its first foray into blockchain gaming in November of last year when it partnered with Japanese firm double jump.tokyo to develop a blockchain-based card game on Oasys. At this stage, it remains unclear whether the game will be completed.
Many believe that blockchain technology will transform the gaming landscape by enabling player-to-player asset trading and ownership transfers, though there are skeptics. Concerns include over-commercialization and “pay-to-win” environments, artificial scarcity, technological issues, poor design, and the inaccessibility of restricted content.
