OriginTrail Discusses AI, Practical Implementation, and the Importance of Knowledge on The Agenda Podcast
Artificial intelligence (AI), large language models (LLMs), and machine learning have permeated nearly every facet of our technology-driven lives. Tools such as ChatGPT provide a variety of useful functions, yet they also possess a potentially negative aspect, as ChatGPT and other LLM chatbots are known to sometimes generate information that is inaccurate, possibly biased, and potentially harmful.
AI serves as a recent illustration of the necessity for information verification. Complex systems like supply chains, where verifiability has always been crucial, have long been recognized as domains where blockchain technology and decentralization can deliver tangible advantages.
One initiative aiming to harness this potential is OriginTrail, a multichain protocol that is developing what it refers to as the first decentralized knowledge graph—a type of data layer that aids in establishing and verifying connections between various data points.

In Episode 14 of The Agenda podcast, hosts Jonathan DeYoung and Ray Salmond engage with Žiga Drev and Tomaz Levak, co-founders of OriginTrail, who discuss knowledge graphs, the significance of decentralization for AI and supply chains, their experiences with enterprise clients, and more.
A “trusted knowledge foundation”
The founders assert that OriginTrail is constructing a “trusted knowledge foundation” aimed at addressing misinformation, whether stemming from AI hallucinations or fraud in medical supply chains. To achieve this, they developed the “Decentralized Knowledge Graph” (DKG), a decentralized variant of the relationship-revealing tools utilized by Google for personalized search recommendations and Amazon for product suggestions.
When questioned about the necessity for decentralized knowledge graphs, the founders contended that centralized services inherently consume user data and generate knowledge without providing equivalent value to those users. Drev remarked to the Agenda.
“We’re not benefiting from these kinds of technologies because we’re not involved.”
With OriginTrail, users can create “knowledge assets” on the DKG, which they can utilize and derive value from similarly to how tokens can be employed in decentralized finance today, according to Levak and Drev.
As adoption of the @origin_trail DKG continues to grow, so does the number of #AI-ready Knowledge Assets! We’re on track to reach 1 million Knowledge Assets published on the #DKG before the current Turing phase concludes, as we celebrate the creation of 500,000 assets… pic.twitter.com/FXvxkxzwcd

The founders also emphasized that establishing a trusted knowledge foundation will assist users in verifying the accuracy of information produced by AI chatbots, for instance, by enabling users to trace the origins of the statements generated.

Drev stated, “By decentralizing AI, we provide users with the ability to verify the source from which an answer was derived. Even when using generative AI, you can still investigate the information trail and determine where that information originates.”
Bringing the blockchain to the real world
A prevalent criticism of the crypto sector is that many projects exist solely to address issues created by other projects, suggesting a lack of genuine real-world necessity for blockchain technology. A primary objective of The Agenda is to identify and examine those use cases that are influencing, or have the potential to influence, the world beyond the cryptosphere.
OriginTrail, for its part, has collaborated with or received support from several prominent enterprise clients, including the British Standards Institution, Walmart, Google, Oracle, and others. When asked how and why everyday individuals should find value in enterprise adoption and blockchain tools that facilitate information verification, Levak noted that different individuals will discover value in various applications.
“I think it may vary to whom certain things are kind of closer,” he remarked. “To some, it might be they understand or they connect with pharmaceuticals or medicines or the sustainable medicine field. Others may be more construction, some may be food.”

However, according to Levak, the most straightforward real-world use case to convey in the current environment revolves around AI:
“Many individuals have experimented with ChatGPT, and typically two questions arise. One is, ‘Am I going to lose my job?’ And the other is, ‘How can I trust this thing?’ And then it becomes quite easy to extend the significance of these types of technologies, as that is something anyone can relate to—whether regarding their job or their situation, where it could assist or hinder them.”
