OnlyFans, Patreon creators shift to Web3 due to concerns over payments and censorship.

Adult content creators are increasingly transitioning to decentralized alternatives to OnlyFans and Patreon, following recent payment challenges and the constant risk of being de-platformed.

Leon Lee, the founder and CEO of Only1 — a decentralized alternative to OnlyFans — informs Cointelegraph that there has been a notable shift in power from intermediaries to content creators, facilitated by .

“The influence of intermediaries is waning while the prominence and income of creators are on the rise,” stated Lee.

In August, creators utilizing Patreon reported issues with withdrawing their earnings, as banks flagged their payments as fraudulent.

I informed the credit card company that the charge was legitimate, fine. Patreon sent an email stating “click here to update your payment” and that link leads to a 404 error. My list of supported creators has vanished, and I must try to recall who I was supporting – there is nothing on the site 2/

Many content creators likely still remember when OnlyFans attempted to prohibit sexually explicit content in 2021, only to reverse the decision shortly thereafter.

In this context, Lee contends that creators will always face the threat of being deplatformed as long as they remain on centralized platforms that utilize traditional payment systems.

“Creators continue to be at risk of being deplatformed and are not realizing their complete earning potential.”

Only1 was launched on the Solana blockchain in March 2023 — supported by Animoca Brands. However, this platform is just one among numerous startups aiming to harness the appeal of adult subscription services with a decentralized crypto approach.

In 2022, OnlyFans model Allie Rae established a crypto-based adult content platform called WetSpace, as an alternative to OnlyFans.

Rae shared with Cointelegraph in December 2022 that she developed the platform to bypass the payment pressures that creators on platforms like OnlyFans were experiencing from banks:

“I began to realize that banks were significantly influencing some of the decisions that platforms had to make. This naturally led me to consider: How do you eliminate the banks? And crypto emerged like a knight in shining armor.”

More recently, creators on OnlyFans have started migrating to Friend.tech, a new decentralized social media platform built on Coinbase’s layer-2 network Base.

Lee anticipates a significant migration event will occur when more creators recognize their desire to break free from censorship regulations imposed by centralized intermediaries.

“Creators are already becoming aware and are increasingly less reliant on intermediaries for monetization,” Lee stated.

He acknowledged that television producers, advertisers, and brands will continue to hold a share in the creator economy, but asserted that a genuine peer-to-peer payment system like blockchain represents the “next logical step” for creators:

“By eliminating the reliance on traditional payment processors, a web3 platform and its community can exercise complete autonomy over the types of content permitted,” he explained, adding:

Since the OnlyFans adult content censorship, creators have been establishing ‘backup accounts’ on various platforms due to such deplatforming risks.”

Proof of Peach, SEXN, and Keyhole are three additional adult entertainment platforms operating within the Web3 environment.

Lee believes that more creators will ultimately gravitate towards decentralized platforms that grant them “full autonomy” over their content and complete ownership rights to their earnings:

“It is an inevitable future where there will no longer be any intermediaries between fans and creators — this is an evident yet unrealized potential of blockchain technology.”
