MeWe social platform with 20 million users to connect with Polkadot parachain.

The social platform MeWe is set to integrate with the Frequency blockchain network, a parachain of Polkadot, as announced on April 26 during Consensus 2023. The announcement indicated that the company will start transferring its users’ accounts to the network within this quarter.

MeWe, which was established in 2012, has been described as a “Facebook alternative” with purportedly enhanced privacy features. A report from Axios in September noted that the network had surpassed 20 million users. Frequency was launched as a Polkadot parachain in November 2022.
During a panel at Consensus 2023 titled “Laying Web3‘s Foundation With Decentralized Social Networks and Data Rights,” MeWe CEO Jeffrey Edell remarked that this transition will enable MeWe to make a lasting commitment to user data ownership:
Blockchain represents a significant enhancement of privacy. It allows the technology to fulfill the promises made by companies […] In the future, MeWe could be acquired by a larger corporation, which might jeopardize privacy, but by committing to the blockchain, we are ensuring that privacy remains intact.
“We have never engaged in surveillance, nor have we promoted negative news or misinformation; that is simply not our practice, so we are well-positioned to transition into the web3 environment,” he stated, adding, “we must proceed cautiously and deliberately, but with unwavering commitment.”
The announcement detailed that the collaboration between MeWe and Frequency is founded on the Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP), which Woodham contributed to as part of Frank McCourt’s Project Liberty. McCourt invested $100 million into the initiative in June 2021.

Amplica Labs was the primary technical contributor to Frequency. Their President, Braxton Woodham, who also participated in the panel, highlighted that the collaboration between Frequency and MeWe will not immediately resolve all issues in social media. However, he asserted that it will establish a foundational framework for app developers to address various challenges in the future.
“Social networks encompass numerous issues, from user experience to moderation and AI algorithms for content curation,” he explained, adding, “it’s nearly impossible to tackle all problems simultaneously, so our collaborative approach is to connect our digital identities on the web to create the social web. This lays the groundwork for addressing the data layer and tackling those complex issues.”
