Meta’s Horizon Worlds debuts on mobile and web platforms in early access.

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, is significantly broadening the metaverse experience beyond virtual reality headsets and extending it to users’ smartphones and computers. In a blog entry dated September 15, Meta Horizon Worlds, the 3D avatar-based social platform, announced the initiation of its early access rollout for mobile and web platforms.
The first experience available on these new platforms is “Super Rumble,” a free-for-all shooter game that was launched in late July. It enables two to six players to participate in five-minute, fast-paced matches. Meta has assured users that additional engaging experiences and worlds will be introduced on the platform in the upcoming months.
Initially, access to Meta Horizon Worlds on the web and the Meta Quest app on Android will be restricted to a select group of users, with an iOS rollout anticipated shortly. Meta intends to gradually broaden the early access as they collect feedback and enhance the user experience.
Meta’s goal is to ensure that the metaverse is available to everyone, irrespective of their device preference. While Quest headsets offer the most immersive experience, Meta acknowledges the necessity for multiple entry points to cater to a wider audience.
Concerning user statistics, Meta has not revealed its monthly active user count, but reports from October 2022 indicated it was under 200,000. Currently, Meta’s social platform is accessible only in select countries, including Canada, France, Iceland, Ireland, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Significantly, other blockchain-based metaverse platforms such as Decentraland and The Sandbox initially debuted as PC and web-based experiences before venturing into virtual reality. Decentraland launched its browser-based 3D virtual world in February 2020, while The Sandbox released its Alpha on PC in November 2021. Both platforms have yet to unveil an official virtual reality version.
In a noteworthy development, Meta has finally provided its avatars in Horizon Worlds with virtual legs. Initially criticized for the absence of this fundamental feature, Meta had promised during Connect 2022 that legs would be incorporated in a future update in 2023. Users have reported that this update, which introduces virtual legs, has already been implemented in the Quest Home space and is now being rolled out to the Horizon Worlds app.
This expansion to mobile and web platforms, along with the addition of virtual legs, represents a significant advancement in Meta’s ongoing efforts to improve the metaverse experience and make it accessible to a larger audience.
