MetaMask Introduces Snaps Functionality in Open Beta, Enhancing Web3 Environment

MetaMask, the widely used non-custodial wallet boasting over 21 million monthly active users, has introduced its Snaps feature in Open Beta, representing a significant advancement towards establishing a completely permissionless ecosystem. This initiative invites developers and the wider community to create innovative solutions to the challenges presented by the evolving Web3 environment.
The wallet’s developers are optimistic that creators will leverage the MetaMask wallet to tackle some of the most intricate issues within Web3. With the launch of Snaps, MetaMask encourages the developer community to introduce independent features and functionalities, transforming the wallet into a modular platform.
This adaptability allows more than 21 million users to develop and deploy features or services through MetaMask without requiring approval from the cryptocurrency company. This authorization facilitates the development of a vast array of services and features, potentially numbering in the thousands or even hundreds of thousands, to resolve various pressing issues in Web3.
MetaMask is confident that by decentralizing development, it can unlock human potential on an unprecedented scale and harness the full spectrum of innovation taking place within the Web3 ecosystem.
However, the journey to launching Snaps has encountered challenges. According to MetaMask, which is owned by ConsenSys, a prominent developer of Ethereum software solutions, discussions with Google revealed a complete overhaul of how extensions like MetaMask operate.
Negotiations and compromises between ConsenSys and Google developers culminated in an agreement on the wallet’s functionality without introducing security vulnerabilities.
Snaps is currently accessible in open beta in MetaMask version v11.0 and can be utilized through all supported browsers, including Chrome and Brave. While this feature is presently available to users of these browsers, Firefox users will gain access at a later, unspecified date.
MetaMask plays a crucial role in the Web3 ecosystem, serving as a conduit between decentralized protocols that offer end-users solutions in decentralized finance (DeFi), the metaverse, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and other domains. As a “hot” (internet-connected) and non-custodial wallet, users can easily integrate it with various services, from trading to staking, without relinquishing control over their assets.
As of September 12, data from the Google PlayStore indicates that over 10 million users have downloaded MetaMask, with additional users across various operating systems such as iOS and Windows.
ConsenSys faced backlash in November 2022 when it altered its privacy policy to gather more data from users depending on Infura, a crucial infrastructure service in Web3 that facilitates seamless connectivity between protocols like MetaMask and the Ethereum mainnet.
