Meta and Microsoft Introduce Open-source AI Model Llama 2

Technology leaders Meta and Microsoft have collaborated to launch Llama 2, an open-source large language model created by Meta that will be incorporated into Microsoft’s Windows operating system and Azure cloud services. This partnership, revealed on July 18, allows for the unrestricted use of Llama 2 for both research and commercial applications, with specific optimizations for Windows environments.
Llama 2 is tailored to meet the requirements of businesses and researchers aiming to build applications utilizing Meta’s AI technology framework. Meta asserts that Llama 2 has been trained on 40% more publicly accessible online data sources compared to its predecessor, Llama 1, enabling it to handle twice the amount of context. The company claims that Llama 2 outperforms numerous rival open-source large language models in areas such as coding skills, reasoning capabilities, and results on knowledge assessments. Nevertheless, as noted in one of its research publications, Meta concedes that it may not match the efficiency of proprietary competitors like OpenAI’s GPT-4.
In a post on Instagram dated July 18, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg conveyed excitement about Llama 2, emphasizing its potential for researchers and businesses to utilize the next generation of large language models as a basis for their projects.
Meta expressed astonishment at the significant demand for Llama 1 following the limited release of its first version in February. The model garnered over 100,000 access requests and was later leaked online by a user on the imageboard platform 4chan. However, according to a February report by Reuters, the figures for Llama 1 are modest compared to the estimated 100 million or more users who registered for ChatGPT within the initial three months.
Through this collaboration, Microsoft now backs two prominent entities in the AI sector, having invested a total of $13 million in OpenAI throughout 2023, as reported by Fortune in January.
Meta’s choice to open source Llama faced criticism from two U.S. senators in June, who raised concerns regarding potential vulnerabilities and inadequate protections in the initial version, which they feared could allow malicious actors to engage in unlawful activities.
