Jio Financial Services (JFS), a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Ltd, is adopting a technology-focused strategy to enhance its product range by investigating blockchain-based platforms and CBDC.

Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of RIL, underscored JFS’s strategic direction during the company’s annual general meeting. Ambani stated that JFS aspires to become a well-known name in the payments sector by catering to both consumers and businesses while fostering digital adoption.

Strategic Move

Importantly, JFS plans to incorporate blockchain-based platforms and CBDC into their offerings. By employing a digital-first strategy, the newly listed subsidiary’s main goal is to expand access to financial services. This initiative aims to enhance usability, reduce costs, and reach a wider audience.

Jio Financial Services, which was separated from RIL’s financial services division last year and went public earlier this month, serves as the means through which the company has entered the financial services sector.

To penetrate the Indian asset management market, JFS has already established a significant partnership with investment giant BlackRock. Consequently, Jio and BlackRock have collaborated to create Jio BlackRock, a digital-first entity where both companies hold equal ownership.

Additionally, in February of this year, Reliance Retail, a segment of RIL, commenced accepting retail payments in digital rupee, a step that could facilitate the adoption of India’s newly introduced CBDC.

Following Reliance’s announcement, India is further exploring the crypto and blockchain landscape. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently highlighted the importance of global cooperation in establishing cryptocurrency regulations during his address at the Group of 20 (G20) summit.
