Immutable zkEVM launches testnet phase featuring 12 Web3 games in progress.
The Web3 gaming platform Immutable has initiated public testing of its Immutable zkEVM in partnership with Polygon Labs.
Development of the zero-knowledge Ethereum virtual machine (zkEVM) network commenced in March following Immutable’s announcement of its collaboration with Polygon Labs. Polygon’s own Ethereum-scaling zkEVM achieved mainnet status on March 27.
In an announcement on August 14, Immutable stated that its zkEVM will provide game developers with reduced development expenses, along with the security and network advantages associated with the Ethereum ecosystem. In March, Immutable co-founder and president Robbie Ferguson indicated that the zkEVM aims to enhance ownership rights for Web3 gamers.

According to Immutable, over 20 gaming companies have joined forces with them to support the launch, including GameStop, TokenTrove marketplace, web-based game distributor Kongregate, game designer iLogos, among others.
At least 12 games have already begun developing their Web3 titles on zkEVM, as noted by Immutable. These titles include CoinArcade, Galaxy Commanders, Medieval Empires, MetalCore, Meta Toy, DragonZ SAGA, Rune Realms, Shardbound, Infinite Victory, EF Defense, and SimWin Football. Notably, MetalCore has announced a beta launch date of September 15 on Immutable zkEVM.
The Immutable zkEVM testnet will utilize zero-knowledge proofs to secure transactions between itself and Sepolia Ethereum, enabling developers to experiment with how the mainnet version will function upon its launch.
The network is entirely compatible with Ethereum applications, allowing developers to migrate Ethereum projects with minimal adjustments, as stated by Immutable. The team will also soon introduce an “Immutable Relayer for currency abstraction and gas sponsorship,” which will enable developers to create gas-less wallet accounts.
Immutable’s chief technology officer and co-founder Alex Connolly conveyed his belief that the new network will be “irresistible” to developers, stating:
“This chain, combined with our suite of platform products, is the first end-to-end EVM solution dedicated exclusively to making games successful. We’re already seeing a massive influx from games, players and partners that will make the Immutable ecosystem irresistible for the next generation of web3 games.”
Immutable is the creator of the Gods Unchained Web3 trading card game, which was initially launched on Ethereum. In April 2021, the company introduced its first zero-knowledge-based layer 2 network, Immutable X, to reduce transaction fees for players of its games.

However, that network does not fully support the Ethereum virtual machine (EVM), which is the computational engine utilized by Ethereum. Consequently, users of Immutable X must generate derivative keys through a web interface to access the network. In contrast, users should now be able to easily switch networks within their wallets to connect to Immutable zkEVM.
Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin has recently commented on the advantages and drawbacks of zkEVMs, noting that they may lead to data inefficiency and latency issues but could also significantly enhance the scalability of Ethereum.
