The CNIL pointed out the dubious legality surrounding data collection and the stipulations for retaining biometric information, leading to similar inquiries in the UK for analogous reasons.
Response from the Worldcoin Foundation
In light of the investigation, the Worldcoin Foundation informed CryptoSlate that it adheres to all applicable data processing laws and regulations in the markets where Worldcoin operates, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The Bavarian State Office for Data Protection Supervision in Europe oversees the foundation and is dedicated to collaborating with regulators globally to ensure complete compliance.
Worldcoin’s Ambitious Token Introduction
Worldcoin has recently launched its token along with “Orbs,” devices intended to scan individuals’ eyes to gather biometric iris data from consenting participants. Through the eye scanning process, users are assigned a unique Worldcoin ID and receive 25 Worldcoin tokens. The project notably claims to be onboarding around eight users per second via the orbs as of July 27.
