Ex-Thodex Chief Sentenced to 11,196 Years in Pivotal Cryptocurrency Trial.0

In a significant ruling, the Anatolian 9th High Criminal Court in Turkey sentenced Faruk Fatih Özer, the former CEO of the now-defunct Thodex cryptocurrency exchange, to an astonishing 11,196 years in prison. Özer was charged with multiple offenses, including “establishing, managing, and being a member of an organization,” “qualified fraud,” and “laundering of property values.”

The court also levied a substantial fine of $5 million against Özer. This legal turmoil arose following Thodex’s sudden collapse in 2021, which left users stranded.

Özer’s siblings were similarly implicated, receiving the same sentences for their purported roles in the crypto scandal. Thodex had previously been a leading cryptocurrency trading platform in Turkey before its unexpected closure, which occurred without prior notice to its users.

The repercussions of the exchange’s shutdown were considerable. Özer fled the country with user assets estimated to be as high as $2.6 billion. While some local media reported the amount as $2 billion, the prosecutor’s indictment cited it as 356 million Turkish liras, approximately $13 million.

The situation took an international turn when Özer was captured in Albania in August 2022. He was later arrested and deported back to Turkey in April 2023.

During the trial, Özer asserted his innocence, claiming he had been unjustly targeted. He characterized Thodex as a legitimate cryptocurrency business that unfortunately encountered failure. Özer confidently remarked, “I am smart enough to manage all institutions in the world. This is evident from the company I founded at the age of 22. If I were to establish a criminal organization, I would not act so amateurishly.”

This intricate legal case involved a total of 21 defendants. Only five appeared in court in person, while 16 were acquitted of “qualified fraud” charges due to a lack of evidence. Four defendants were ordered to be released immediately, while the remaining individuals received varying sentences based on their involvement in the scheme.

The Thodex case has drawn international scrutiny as a clear illustration of the regulatory hurdles facing the cryptocurrency sector. As the aftermath of this high-profile trial unfolds, the verdict conveys a strong message regarding accountability and the repercussions of fraudulent conduct within the crypto industry.
