Ethereum introduces new test network ‘Holešky,’ designating 1.6 billion ETH for developers.

On September 15, Ethereum developers introduced a new testnet named “Holešky.” This network is anticipated to facilitate staking, infrastructure, and protocol development, as outlined in its developer documentation. Sepolia will continue to be the primary network for application development.

According to Ethereum developer Tim Beiko, an initial allocation of 1.6 billion Holešky testnet Ether (HETH) will be distributed to validators on the launch day of Holešky to kickstart the network. This amount is tenfold the Ether (ETH) available on the mainnet. Beiko mentioned that developers felt confident in generating this quantity since “devnets [are] regularly using 10B supply.”
Previously, the Goerli testnet served as the platform for testing new staking, infrastructure, and protocol advancements. Goerli, which has been operational since its launch in 2018, is the oldest Ethereum testnet. In October, protocol developers raised concerns that Goerli’s supply of Goerli ETH was insufficient to meet testing requirements. With its substantial initial supply of HETH, Holešky is expected to address this issue.

Since the introduction of Sepolia in 2021, the Ethereum team has encouraged application developers to transition from Goerli to Sepolia, leaving only protocol developers on the older network before Holešky’s launch. The team intends to phase out Goerli in January 2024. Following its deprecation, Goerli will be supported for an additional year before being completely shut down, as per its documentation.
Holešky is likely to experience significant usage, as Ethereum developers have an ambitious agenda ahead. They plan to implement proto-danksharding, danksharding, and other features aimed at reducing fees, along with enhancements like Verkle trees, which are designed to lower the costs of running a node. Each of these features will require testing on a testnet prior to their deployment on the mainnet.
